Background and Objectives
The chemical science, through its application as an industrial technology, has contributed greatly to the economic and social well-being of mankind. To cite just one example, the invention and development of plastics, synthetic fibers and rubbers, and other chemical products have created the so-called "Materials Revolution". It is well known that the "materials revolution" has played a significant role in promoting the sophistication of industrial structure by stimulating birth of new industries and spurring further growth of key industrial sectors. In this way, it has made the human life more affluent and better in quality.

Today, new opportunities are opening up for the chemical science to achieve further advances. In the high technology areas such as electronics, new materials and biotechnology, a need is growing for technologies to control and manipulate substances on the molecular and even atomic levels. And the realization is mounting rapidly that the chemical science is a major driving force in satisfying this need.

In the advent of this new age of chemistry, there is a widely-shared expectation that the chemical and related industries play an important role by drawing on the knowhow and experience they have accumulated over the years. For the chemical community to meet this challenge, it is necessary to allow for active interchange of intellectual resources not only of its own but of other disciplines and industrial sectors, both domestically and internationally.

It was with this recognition that The Association for the Progress of New Chemistry was inaugurated on May 21, 1986 in Tokyo to serve as a forum for such dialogues.

The Association works to help explore and identify new business opportunities through chemistry, thus, contributing to the growth of frontier industries beyond the traditional boundary of industrial sectors. The Association keeps contacts with academic circles and supports scientific activities in frontier fields.

The membership of the Association consists of major firms in the chemical and various sectors interested in chemistry. The Association is open to a wide spectrum of scientific communities and also to non-Japanese companies.
Activities
1. Regular Meetings

The following three meetings are held regularly.

Top Forum is a meeting of chief executive officers of the member firms to discuss major business of the Association and to exchange views. This meeting is held bimonthly.

Research Executive Forum is a meeting of board-level representatives in charge of R & D and corporate planning. At the meeting held bimonthly, they discuss technological aspects and future outlook of relevant frontier industries and problems in research and development. They also hold discussions with academic scholars.

Workshop of Frontier Technologies --- four workshops have been organized to study the frontiers of science and technology : advanced chemistry, new materials, electronics & information and life science. They organize study committees to assess the feasibility of collaborative research projects when some specific subjects emerge.

2. Seminars and Symposia
The members of the workshops plan and hold seminars by inviting prominent scholars and researchers to discuss the frontiers of science and technology on selected subjects. Another kind of seminars will be held of younger researchers of the members companies and for students and the public at large.
International Symposium will be convened every other year, mainly for the discussion among industrial representatives, academic scholars and government officials on specific themes.

3. Fellowship to Researchers and Support to Academic Circles
The Association grants fellowships to young researchers conducing to the promotion of new chemistry and helps the academic circles in their international conferences and other activities for enhanced cooperation between industry and academe and further investigation of technological development as it ought to be.

4. Spread Enlightenment Activities
The Association introduces each active conduct and guides throughout the homepage that is linked and based on the information concerning New Chemistry.
